about

A wise reporter once deemed Unicorn as "serious entertainment," capturing the essence of our music that spans from the lighter realms of pop/rock to the intricate landscapes of progressive sounds. Featuring instruments like grand piano, harp, cello, and violins, our melodies weave a tapestry of emotions, reflecting the journey to becoming a more present and compassionate human being.

The inspiration behind this musical odyssey comes from Tonje's story as a trauma survivor, evident in the debut album "BeHold & BeHeld." Each lyric is a heartfelt exploration of the human experience, a testament to resilience, and an ode to self-compassion.

In Tonje's own words, "Feeling lonely, happy, in love, heartbroken, majestic, lost… there has always been a song to accompany me." Music became her loyal companion during a childhood marked by emotionally immature grown-ups. It was her solace, her friend, and the source of her first memories of being truly present without discomfort or fear.

Tonje's musical journey began with vinyl records, Abba's "Arrival" being the catalyst. The magic of music transformed her, inspiring her to create her own lyrics and eventually learn instruments like the clarinet and saxophone. Now, on the album "You Are," she rediscovered her connection with these instruments, a testament to the enduring relationship she has with her musical companions.

Attending meaningful shows remains a powerful way for Tonje to feel connected to others, an experience she wishes to share through her music. She says, "All the music I have listened to in my life tells me I am not alone in any of my struggles. I hope I can, in some way, give someone else that same feeling. We are hurt, and we can heal."

Unicorn, led by Tonje Ettesvoll, began in 1998 with a performance at a center for survivors of abuse. Today, André Storeng contributes his magnificent keyboard skills, and the new album "You Are" features various talented musicians. Despite the challenges and a hiatus, Unicorn reemerged, with Tonje now working on her third album.

Join us on this musical journey, where healing melodies echo the resilience of the human spirit, and every note tells a story of strength, connection, and the enduring power of music.
